The primary function of washers is to provide a smooth, uniform bearing surface. Washers are generally installed at the base of a nut or bolt head to distribute load and protect the connection surface.
The chemical, mechanical, and dimensional requirements for hardened washers are covered under ASTM Specification F436. These washers are fully hardened and carburized to enhance strength and performance. Although they are physically smaller than standard ASTM F844 flat washers, they offer superior load resistance.
Except for applications involving low carbon steel bolts, ASTM F436 hardened washers are the recommended choice for use with most structural and high-strength fasteners.
